All the Jobs I Do as a Self-Published Author and Illustrator: Wearing All the Hats (Sometimes All at Once!)

When people hear I’m a self-published author and illustrator, and photographer they usually picture me cozied up with a cup of coffee, sketching dreamy scenes, or snapping photographs or writing whimsical stories. And yes, that part is magical—but there’s so much more that goes on behind the scenes. Being a self-published creator and business owner means I’m not just the storyteller and artist—I’m also the publisher, marketer, tech support, and logistics manager.

Here’s a peek at the many hats I wear for my author/illustrator business:

1. Writer & Illustrator

This is the heart of it all—the part I love most. I create the story, bring characters to life, and illustrate every dreamy page. Whether I’m scribbling story ideas in a notebook or adding finishing touches like hidden "Easter Eggs" in the book this is where the magic is for me.

2. Editor

Before a story sees the light of day, I go through countless rounds of self-editing. I’m checking grammar, making sure the pacing flows, and ensuring the illustrations align with the tone and plot. I also collaborate with my professional editor before the story goes to print—but even then, I’m deeply involved in the process.

3. Book Designer

From choosing the perfect typeface to laying out each page and designing the cover, book design is a critical step. It’s how I make sure the story feels cohesive, beautiful, and print-ready. My skills from being a professional photographer really helped me here as I already knew how to use In Design for the book layout.

4. Publisher

As a self-publisher, I handle the logistics of bringing my book into the world. That includes getting ISBNs, uploading files to print-on-demand platforms, managing distribution channels, and making sure every little detail meets the publishing standards, and trust me there are thousands of tiny details. When that error message pops up, and trust me it will, there is always some new learning and troubleshooting to do.

5. Marketer & Social Media Manager

Posting on Instagram, sending newsletters, planning book launches, and running ads—yep, that’s me too. Marketing is its own full-time job, and connecting with readers (especially parents, local libraries and shops, and teachers) is a big part of building a loyal audience.

6. Customer Service & Order Fulfillment

When someone orders a book directly from me, I’m the one packaging it, writing thank-you notes, and taking trips to the post office. I answer emails, troubleshoot issues, and make sure every reader feels valued.

7. Business Owner

This means handling taxes, keeping track of expenses, budgeting for print runs, and making sure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes. It’s not always glamorous, but it’s essential. And if I am being totally honest here, my amazing husband shares this hat with me as he helps with the tax end of things.

8. Creative Dreamer

I always have my head in the clouds, dreaming up new stories, imagining magic, and thinking about what I want to create next. This role fuels everything else.

Final Thoughts

Being a self-published author and illustrator (and photographer) is both wildly creative and deeply demanding. It’s a mix of art and hustle, imagination and spreadsheets. But every time a child enjoys one of my books —I remember why I do it.

It’s a lot of work, but it’s my work. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
